Opening
I was Makeda once, a seamstress in the Kingdom of Aksum. My mother’s quick wit lived in me, passed down with the silver needle set she pressed into my palm the day she scolded me for mistakes I no longer remember.
I can still see Dawit by the river at sunset, his smile as he placed a necklace of gold and azure in my hands. Lady Abrehet, my employer, rarely gave compliments, but once, just once, she told me the linen and textile stores were mine to command, so long as I stayed in her service.
The turning point
But my work drew the attention of Princess Sofya. She demanded my exclusive service, that I abandon Lady Abrehet and bind my craft to her alone. My loyalty, however, was not a thread so easily broken.
When I refused, my fealty was answered not with understanding, but with a princess's rage. She tore open my throat. I rose hours later, a stranger in my own body. The loom was silent, the needle was cold, and the air no longer filled my lungs. Everything I was, everything I had known, was stripped from me in a single, violent night.
Now, centuries have passed. I write so you may read the story of my life as it unfolded, each entry a piece of the woman I was, the creature I became, and what remains of me still.
