An Unfamiliar Hunger

I am cold.

The day after Princess Sofya turned me into what I am, I went to meet Dawit. My beloved Dawit. I was anxious. Restless. My body throbbed with a hunger I didn’t understand. Food would not satisfy me. Drink turned to ash in my mouth. Nothing called to me but the smell of blood.

My mind was split in two: one part wanted to see him, to fall into his arms like I always had. The other wondered what I would do to him when I got too close.

The Last Embrace

When we met by the river, he knew something was wrong. He told me I was cold as stone. He saw my pale skin, the hollowness behind my eyes. He stepped closer, and the scent of him struck me like wine to an empty stomach.

I tried to hold back. I truly did.

But in a haze I lunged before I even knew I had moved. When my senses returned, he was still in my arms but unmoving. Breathless. Gone.

I screamed to the sky and held him for the last time as his warmth slipped away.
